HDMI Cable Guide

How to recognize a common HDMI Cable

HDMI Cables

If you own an HDTV, chances are you want to experience the best possible picture and sound quality from your investment. One of the best ways to do that is by using our HDMI cable. HDMI is the global standard for connecting high-definition Consumer Electronics and PC products. It’s the uncompressed, all-digital interface that delivers both dazzling quality and unmatched ease of use.

The acronym HDMI stands for "High Definition Multimedia Interface". As of this year, HDMI connectivity is already standard on a wide range of products:

  • HDTVs
  • Blu-ray Disc players
  • multimedia PCs
  • gaming systems
  • digital camcorders, and more.

HDMI is commonly used to connect digital video and audio sources such as cable/satellite boxes, AV receivers, video game consoles (i.e. PlayStation3 and Xbox 360), and even computers to compatible HDTVs, computer monitors, and digital audio devices. Although there are various versions of HDMI, all have the potential to support resolutions of up to 1080p.

HDMI technology provides the highest possible signal to meet the needs of today’s – and tomorrow’s – HD entertainment systems. With a single cable, it transmits:

  • digital video
  • multi-channel surround sound
  • advanced control data

With HDMI connectivity, you get it all. The convenience of a one-cable solution, plus the power and performance of a high-speed digital link. Now and in the future, consider it the best way to connect HD.

Q: What makes the cables at Innovation Technologies so inexpensive? Are the as good as the expensive name brand cables available at local retail stores?
A: Our cables match or exceed the quality, materials, construction and most importantly, the specifications, of those commonly found at retail stores. We demonstrate our confidence by standing behind our cables with a lifetime warranty.

The remarkable savings with our cables are a result of eliminating the costs of huge advertising budgets, over- commissioned sales reps, excessive packaging, and distribution warehouses. By focusing on quality and specifications, we manufacture cables comparable to your favorite name brands at a fraction of the cost.

Q: Do I need a male cable or a female cable?
A: All consumer electronics devices have female ports on them for connecting cables. So when connecting two devices together you will need a male to male(M/M) cable. Male to female cables are mostly used for extending the length of a cable by allowing you to connect the two together.

Q. Is HDMI the same quality as DVI? Are they backward compatible?
A:
Both HDMI and DVI can transmit uncompressed digital video at the same quality. However, DVI is limited to video only. Therefore when using an HDMI to DVI cable, for example, only video, and not the audio, is transmitted.

HDMI is fully backward compatible with DVI compliant devices. HDTVs will display video received from DVI devices, and TVs with DVI inputs can support video from HDMI sources.

Q: Is it true that I lose HDMI signal when running the cable at a longer lengths?
A: When running your HDMI cable over ~15FT, it is recommended that you go with our quality, thicker cables (22AWG or 24AWG). For cable runs up to around 70FT, it is recommended to go with at least the 22AWG HDMI cable. Lastly, for cable runs beyond ~70FT we have special cables with an included EQ chip to regulate and enhance the signal at those distances.

Q: Will I need a signal booster to get 1080p with longer cables?
A: All of our Certified Cables will easily pass a 1080p signal. Our extended length cables (40ft and longer) have been able to pass a 1080p signal. However, in some situations, an equalizer was needed. Results will vary depending on the equipment being used. Not all pairs of equipment are capable of passing signals over extended runs. Be sure to test the cable before doing any wall runs.

Q: Do they have a way to link short HDMI cables to use as a longer one?
A: Yes. We actually provide an HDMI coupler that can be used to connect two average length HDMI cables for use as a longer one. Our HDMI coupler introduces no noticeble signal loss.
